Read Around The Planet Virtual Tour

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

This SlideShare presentation was for our reading partners from Michigan to give them a sense of where my students live and how we live different aspects of our lives. The students took the photos, arranged the photos and decided what message they wanted to send to our colleagues. We connected with them through video conferencing to celebrate Dr. Suess's birthday to share our understandings of Part 1 in Julie of the Wolves and will continue to engage with them through epals and our blog at http://rosepelican.blogspot.com

  1. How does this reading partners thing work? Is there a website you go to, find a class, and connect?

The video gave me a good sense of Pelican Narrows throughout the year.

  2. This particular Reading Around the Planet project occurs once a year to celebrate Dr. Suess's birthday. Brenda Laroque Hill from KCDC in LaRonge contacted us because we are in their zone and they made the connection for us based on our grade, date requested.
My class and our partners have been corresponding via email for about a month. Any contributions they make through the blog we set up has been for an introductory lesson in Web 2.0 utilization as have the other tools we have been using. It also makes up my project for the class. We will continue to be epals after the project.
You can google Read Around the Planet to get details for next year.
If you are not already, you should become familiar with Class 2.0 ,WiziQ, Elluminate, and even Twitter as these are great tools to connect with other teachers who are also looking for connections class wise in many cases.

  3. Cheryl you are an amazing teacher. Your students are fortunate to have the opportunity to create such wonderful projects with you. I really loved the northern supermarket picture. Did you receive any comments about eating moose from your southern cohort of readers? What a wonderful way to teach culture and tradition to groups of people all over the world. Take care Pam

  4. Thanks Pam,

No comments about the moose but we did talk one time about how free roaming animals are more healthier to eat than farm cattle and wild animals are not subjected to chemicals or growth hormones. I believe the Grade 6 students have experiences eating different kinds of foods not local to their community so they must be receptive to people eating unusual foods.
